My Favourite House Plant

One of my favourite house plants and also one of the easiest to take care of. The Sansevieria or snake plant varieties are actually considered a succulent and are a perfect way to start of your plant journey.

I love this plant so much that I have 3 different varieties! I have the Black Coral (left, darker green named Severus), the Night Owl (bottom right, green with yellow trim named Draco) and the Moonshine (back, light green named Lupin). I don’t know why I never started off with this plant. For some reason I wanted to find the perfect ones. A lot of my plants need ample sunlight and that happens to only happen in the back of my house for the majority of the day so that’s where most of my plants live. After learning a few things about the Sansevieria plants, I finally bought my first two a few months ago and my third one just recently. They live in the front of my house where I spend the evening portion of my day - because that’s where my living room is. P.S. I named Severus and Draco for obvious reasons (Harry Potter reference). I stuck with the HP theme and named the Moonshine plant Lupin because of Prof. Lupin being a wear-wolf and when do wear-wolves transform? During a full “moon”.

Sun Exposure: ☀️☀️☁️☁️☁️

These plants can thrive in sunlight but also don’t need a lot of it! That’s why they are perfect in the front of my house because I don’t get a lot of sun there and many plants do not thrive without sunlight. Thankfully these plants need minimal sunlight in their lives. I’m actually going to get another one for my bedroom! I need some life in there and since my room also doesn’t get sun all day this plant will be perfect.

Hydration: 💧💧☁️☁️☁️

This is one of the many reason why you should start off with a snake plant. Many first time plant buyers are afraid of killing their plants. Thankfully this plant does not need to be watered often! She only gets thirsty every 10-14 days. That’s perfect right?! I water mine every 2 weeks (14 days) and I water all my other plants weekly. So if you forget to water your snake plant; that’s okay!

Tip: I always give my plant babies a shower every once in a while. Just take a spray bottle and lightly mist the leaves of your plants. Many plants like to feel like they’re in a greenhouse and of course, unless you have one, your house won’t act like that for them.

Placement: 🏡

Since these plants don’t require all the sunlight in the world, you can literally place it anywhere in your house!

Benefits: ✔️✔️✔️✔️✔️

This plant hits all the marks when looking for the perfect plant.

  1. It’s durable and gorgeous.

  2. It’s easy to propagate so you can share with all you plant loving friends.

  3. They are great to help filter the air around you. They admit oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide at night making for a better nights sleep. Also they improve breathing and defend against air borne allergies.

  4. They are pest resistant.

  5. They require low maintenance - low light & minimal water.

Symbolism: 🐍

Cleanliness is a big part of the snake plant because it’s known to release oxygen at night and absorb carbon dioxide during the day. This leaves it to be a good luck plant because it takes in the bad and releases the good.

Snake plants are also very durable. They are a great gift to give to a fellow lover of nature.

A Word of Caution: 🟡

Snake plants - along with many other house plants - can be toxic to our fur friends. When ingested the plant can cause nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. So be sure to place your snake plant away from your pets reach.
